“Why are the pieces in my chess set of slightly different sizes?”

This is a good quality small Calvert-style chess set of ivory that is natural & cochineal-stained, circa 1790-1840. It was very clear that this was a complete and undamaged set: a rare find! However, the pieces varied significantly along several measurement parameters. Some of these variations were variations in turning/carving. The tendency of the bases to be oval rather than round, however, is a typical deformation that only occurs over time, caused by differential shrinkage of the material. Wood sets demonstrate this as well.
